Dear friend and fellow lover of a timely word,

I find David Whyte's reflection on poetry compelling and...well, prayerful: “The unknown is the dark basket into which we plunge our hands to bring out words that feed the hungry and clothe the poor—as good a definition of poetry as we might find.”

I've been writing poems for a long time, but I've never challenged myself with such a formidable goal as this: write a new poem each day for thirty days in a row. Thirty poems in thirty days sounds like...a lot of unknown. But I can't wait to see what this kind of commitment (and courage!) will yield: Bread? Clothing? I hope so!

The 30/30 Project has been described as a marathon, and I know for sure that I will need encouragement to make it to the finish line! This is not my first experience working with the good people at Tupelo Press (I participated in a manuscript conference back in 2020), and I have found here a generous spirit and joyful commitment to poetry and poets, and it is an honor to volunteer my creative energies in support of this press. Will you support me and my writing by donating to Tupelo Press?

The nuts and bolts:

Accompanied by a cohort of other fine poets, I will provide Tupelo Press with a new poem every day in April. The poems will be posted daily for you to read.

At the end of the project, the poems belong to me to continue revising and to submit for publication anywhere I please. 30/30 poems have been taken by over 200 journals and featured in over 40 published chapbooks.

Your gift to Tupelo Press helps them to keep publishing exquisite and diverse voices that might never be heard otherwise. And, every dollar gives me confidence to write more...to keep plunging my hands into the "dark basket of the unknown" to see what words I might pull out. May they nourish. May they clothe.

Thank you so very much for your support in whatever way you can give it.

With joy,

Sarah Crowley Chestnut
