A Conversation in the Public Domain is my attempt to draft and share 30 poems in 30 days. For a while I've been writing poems that start with searches in public-domain archives like Project Gutenberg, and I'll be continuing that, in public, thanks to Tupelo. I find myself drawn to sources that are in some way in proximity, texts of the region where I now live, which is New England. I'm struck by how writing can have a reciprocal relationship with the land, as in the way a freshwater pond that fed the imagination (and belly) of a man named Henry David Thoreau has been protected in large part because it mattered to him to write about it, because he listened. His words are in the background image of this page, installed at Brister Hill near Walden.

Feel free to join the conversation-- let me know if a poem-post moves you, or sparks a question of your own.

Your sponsorship supports Tupelo, an independent small press that has been publishing poetry, literary fiction, and creative nonfiction written by real human beings for a quarter century.

A bit about me: When I'm not teaching or cooking or out walking, I write and self-publish small books of poems, and am a veteran of poetry marathons. My writing has appeared in Bramble (Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets), and the Journal of the Association of Franciscan Colleges and Universities; my visual work is in the collection of the Center for Prairie Studies in Grinnell, Iowa.
