Dear Friends,

At the midpoint of our seventeenth year— and 160 volumes into our life—I want you to know how grateful I am for your continuing support of our nonprofit mission, to create one of the most exciting and genuinely open lists of poets and prose writers, and to honor their work with the most elegantly beautiful books you will find. And I want to extend a special thanks to all who contributed in past years—your donations have allowed us to produce books that bring us to the attention of booksellers, reviewers, and most importantly, readers the world over.

Here are seven Tupelo facts you might not have known:

1. Not only has Tupelo been a champion of emerging writers, but also, we have given a special place of prominence to women and to writers of color. For example, nearly 2/3 of our books have been authored by women. This is an astonishment in the world of publishing.

2. Tupelo is the only independent literary press to distribute its books through its own contracted sales reps, rather than relying on ponderously large distribution companies, thus granting a more intimate and effective relationship with booksellers across the country.

3. Tupelo is now in our fourth year of sponsoring the ground-breaking Teen Writing Center in Charlottesville, VA – a hugely successful model for all of our coming teen writing centers.

4. Tupelo offers one of the most talked-about online literary journals, Tupelo Quarterly, which has already been recognized by the Best American series, and elsewhere.

5. Tupelo's Dorset Prize, while open to all poets – has gone to a first book more than half the time since its inception 12 years ago.

6. Tupelo sponsors the only open-source, continuing poem in the land: The Million Line Poem – with free access.

7. Tupelo has published significant work, including brilliant translations, from writers around the globe, including Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, North America and South America.

Your contributions help provide Tupelo Press with the means to continue shaping American and international letters. Help us show a troubled world that great writing matters, and that the work of the small press is more important today than ever before.

All our best,

Jeffrey Levine
