About Me:

Kara Penn lives in Denver, Colorado with her husband, four young daughters, and two dogs. She is the founder and principal consultant of Mission Spark, working with nonprofits, government, and philanthropic foundations to further the missions and social impact of their programs. Kara is the recipient of several U.S.-based fellowships and holds graduate degrees from the University of Chicago and MIT. She co-authored the book Fail Better, which was published by Harvard Business Review Press in 2014, and was selected as one of the best business books of the year by Business Digest. She’s participated as a 30|30 Poet for Tupelo Press in October 2013. Her work has been published in a variety of journals, including The Threepenny Review, Studies in Arts and Humanities, and The Ekphrastic Review.

Why I am Participating in the 30|30 Project:

Your support will give me vital inspiration as I write for thirty days this month. I did not write a single poem during the first year of the pandemic, which felt like a big loss of momentum to the year prior when I was very productive-- completing a significant manuscript revision, writing new work, and getting poems accepted in stretch journals like Threepenny Review. I am happy that this effort helps fundraise for Tupelo Press so they can continue their google work. I feel that Tupelo Press has published some great poets and I love the creativity and push this project provides to poets. I have especially admired the work of Tupelo poets like Maggie Smith and Ilya Kaminsky who is being honored this year with the Anisfield-Wolf Award.

For the 30/30 project, Tupelo Press provides the canvas, I bring my words, accompanied by other fine poets, writing thirty poems in thirty days, all ours to edit and submit as we wish. 30/30 poems have been taken by over 90 journals and featured in over 40 published chapbooks, all so Tupelo Press can keep publishing exquisite and diverse voices that might never be heard otherwise.

Every dollar gives me confidence to write more, and helps the press place more poems in gorgeous books. Help me to help this distinguished press by helping me to meet my fundraising goal.
